SOLIDWORKS System Requirements – The Straight Dope

These are the minimum system requirements for SOLIDWORKS and every SolidBox custom laptop and custom workstation meets and exceeds these requirements. You might get by with the minimum SOLIDWORKS system requirements for basic part modeling and working with small assemblies. However, the bare minimum won’t cut the mustard for most SOLIDWORKS users. Without a custom laptop or custom workstation that meets the minimum system requirements for SOLIDWORKS, you risk loss of productivity. Moreover, if your system doesn’t meet the minimum SOLIDWORKS system requirements, it could become unstable and result in lost data. Therefore, if you’re unsure about what is best for your use-case, reach out to us. Give us a call at 877-697-9269 or email us and we can pair you with the right custom laptop or custom workstation.

What SOLIDWORKS SaysWhat We Say
Operating SystemsWindows 10 x64, Windows 7 SP1 x64Yup. Don't have any options here. At this point, though, you should definitely be using Windows 10.
RAM16GB bare minimum; 32GB recommended;
ECC Recommended
This makes sense to us. Just remember that your video card will monopolize some system RAM. You want at least twice as much system RAM as you have VRAM.
Video CardNVIDIA Quadro SeriesRemember that starting with 2019, SOLIDWORKS can now leverage the computational power of your video card in opening large assemblies.
Processor3.3 GHz (Turbo) or higherPay attention to the turbo number. This is the frequency at which your processor will be operating most often. A 6-core processor is great for general SOLIDWORKS use (Creative Series Desktops). Get 8 or more cores for Simulation (Engineering Series Desktops) and dual processors for Rendering (Professional Series Desktops).
Install MediaDVD drive or broadband internet connection.If you get a SolidBox, whatever version(s) of SOLIDWORKS you're currently using will come pre-installed.

Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari
We prefer Google Chrome.
Excel and Word2013, 2016, 2019Did we really need a new version of Office after 2010? Just kidding. Do yourself a favor and get an Office 365 subscription.
